Iowa Hosts 19th Annual Athletics Named Scholarship Celebration
Iowa City, IA - The University of Iowa Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the University of Iowa Foundation recently honored 350 contributors and student-athletes at the 19th annual named athletic scholarship celebration. The event, hosted in the Transamerica practice gym in the Dale and Marilyn Howard Family Pavilion recognized student-athletes, awarded endowed athletic scholarships, and allowed them to connect with the contributor of their athletic scholarship. It is an annual event that both student-athletes and contributors look forward to.
"It's a very special opportunity for our student-athletes to get to meet and thank our donors personally," said Iowa women's gymnastics coach Larissa Libby. "I know when I was competing as an undergraduate (at LSU) I was never introduced to a donor and I never had a chance to say thank you. This event increases the student-athletes awareness of the generosity that is surrounding our program - which is very valuable. I talk a lot to my team about being gracious, and grateful - and this event is the epitome of those ideals."
Joining coach Libby on the event program was director of track and field Joey Woody. The coaches took turns asking some student-athletes about their experiences and what their scholarships mean to them.
Senior hurdler MonTayla Holder, one of the student-athletes on the event program, said "I will be the first person to graduate from college in my family. Earning the opportunity to compete at Iowa, while earning a degree is a dream for me, and I am very grateful to be able to say thank you in person."
Women's basketball letterwinner Sue Beckwith, M.D., lead contributor to the P. Sue Beckwith, M.D. Boathouse and also contributor of two endowed scholarships, spoke about taking advantage of opportunities, and also spoke to the motivation of many contributors - to give opportunities to the next generation in gratitude for the opportunities they were given in their past.
The evening was capped with guests attending the Iowa women's basketball game against Penn State, including a halftime introduction of all athletic endowed scholarship contributors.
