Lark Birdsong Honored
Lark Birdsong, Iowa Women’s Basketball’s first head coach, was recognized in two ways last week as part of the Carver Hawkeye Arena Rededication event.
She was on hand with her family to see the head women’s basketball coach’s office, which had been named in her honor. Fourteen of her former players generosity combined their gifts to make the naming gift. A special plaque was placed at the entry to Coach Lisa Bluder’s office marking this special recognition.
The other recognition of Coach Birdsong came unexpectedly. Coach Lisa Bluder was part of the official program for the rededication event. She began her remarks by commenting on how proud she was to be Iowa’s fifth women’s basketball head coach, but that she wanted to acknowledge and thank the efforts made by Iowa’s first head basketball coach – Coach Birdsong. The crowd gave Birdsong a round of applause in recognition.
P. Sue Beckwith, M.D. played a key role in bringing the 14 women together to make the gift to the Carver Campaign in Coach Birdsong’s honor. She and her former teammates toured the P. Sue Beckwith, M.D., Boathouse, which opened in Sept. of 2009 and was named in honor or Dr. Beckwith’s leadership gift to that campaign as part of the weekend’s festivities.
