I-Club Spring Banquet held in Marshalltown
Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery along with football’s Norm Parker, Abby Emmert from the women’s basketball coaching staff, and Kurt Backes with the wrestling staff took the stage Tuesday, May 10 to recap their seasons and discuss what the future holds to a record crowd of over 200 Hawk Fans at the Elmcrest Country Club.
Coach McCaffery commented that Iowa ranked fifth at the national level in improved attendance. He appreciates the way that Iowa fans have come back to men’s basketball. He confirmed that he is really enjoying the banquet circuit (25+ stops are made by coaches and athletic department and UI Foundation staff throughout the spring around the state) and the excitement fans have for the basketball team, recruits, and the future.
I-Club member Curt Ward presented John Mead with their chapter’s annual Hawk of the Year award. Mead, owner of Mead dairy until 1981, has been a lifetime hawk fan, highlighted by his opportunity to see Iowa football legend Nile Kinnick play in person. Defensive Coordinator Norm Parker called him an inspiration. Read more on John Mead’s story.
The annual Ben Trickey Memorial Scholarship was also presented to football kicker Mike Meyer. The Trickey Scholarship is awarded each year at the Marshall County Spring Banquet to a student-athletic from any sport who began their career at Iowa as a walk on. Meyer, a sophomore, is a Dubuque native.
