Boone County I-Club Spring Banquet
The Boone-Story County I-Club hosted their 40th Annual Spring Banquet with a crowd of 200 coming out to hear from our coaches on April 26. Our volunteers recruited an event record 28 new I-Club members - a testament to the loyalty and support of our Hawk fans.
The evening’s program was led by Voice of the Hawkeyes Gary Dolphin, who always helps create a memorable evening for our fans.
When Luke Eustice from Iowa wrestling took the stage, he stressed the importance they place on having “an imagination”, especially for their freshman who might not be wearing the black and gold singlet yet in Carver Hawkeye Arena, but need to be working every day to be ready to go when it is their time. “Imagine yourself” winning in Carver and competing at the highest level.
Football’s Ken O’Keefe shared a personal story of trying to keep up with James Vanderberg’s “manly-sounding” boar hunting trip by taking his own trip to the Boundary Waters, to fish. He only came back with one fish so he wasn’t sure he accomplished his goal. O’Keefe soon got back to the topic of football, noting that there were a lot of expectations early in the season and things didn’t work out the way they thought. He said the team felt like they underachieved a little bit near the end of the year. In the end, “finishing ballgames the way we want to finish them, the way you’re supposed to finish them, is what we are all about.”
Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery noted that the people in the room, the people that follow the program, and the people he has an opportunity to work with are truly special. He also reflected on the past season and the great team he has, “we were a little undersized, a little undermanned, but what we had was great character on our team. And when you have character, those teams get better.” McCaffery said he is grateful for Hawk fans continuing to hang in there with the team throughout the season and for appreciating and understanding how hard the team worked and improved. This gave him tremendous confidence, and provides excitement in the future.
President of the Boone-Story County I-Club, Scot Kinne was very pleased with the event and proud of the record number of new I-Club members they were able to generate. There’s still plenty of time to catch a 2011 I-Club Spring Banquet. Visit www.jointheiclub.com for a complete list of the 2011 Banquet season dates.
