Black Hawk County I-Club Spring Banquet

Waterloo, IA

The Black Hawk County I-Club event boasted some former Hawkeye greats as well as a future star at its annual spring banquet and golf outing.  Former men’s basketball standouts Kent McCausland and Ryan Bowen spent some time visiting with Hawk fans and Iowa alums while Cedar Falls high school senior Austin Abbas was also in attendance with his dad.  Hawk fans might not know Austin yet, but he has already signed with Iowa Men’s Swimming Coach Marc Long (also a Cedar Falls native) to compete for the Iowa men’s swim team in 2012.

The annual event, held at Sunnyside County Club, welcomed their second largest group ever – almost 300 strong.  The program was led by Mac McCausland, longtime Black Hawk County I-Club board members and part-time television basketball analyst and I-Club banquet emcee.  Mac brought up Matt Henderson with the UI Foundation (another Cedar Falls product) to speak about the great support that we get from the Cedar Valley and to encourage any non I-Club members in attendance to consider supporting our very successful athletics program.

Gary Barta, who worked at Cedar Falls’ UNI for many years in the mid 90’s and met his wife (Waterloo native Connie), shared the state of the department as well as the projects on the horizon, which include a new facility for the golf teams and an indoor practice facility for football to replace the aging bubble.  Following comments from Jan Jensen (Associate Head Coach, Iowa women’s basketball) about their 11th ranked recruiting class, Norm Parker with football’s forecast of the 2011 defense and Tom Brands with wrestling reminding patrons about the June 4 event honoring Coach Gable, Gables Gold. Fran McCaffery took the floor and was eager to thank people for their loyalty to the program and for sticking with the team through what he described as “an up and down climb, not a straight line” towards improvement and a better product on the floor.  He said with improved depth, speed, and size in 2011-2012, he anticipates more success in the near future.
